Boy do I feel better now. Kansas state senators advanced a bill concerning breast feeding to a final vote that should take place today. I mean good god. Once again our government is stepping into an area they should not have too and for that matter should not. Why is it that our government seems to believe it needs to tread in areas of our lives that are so personal as breast feeding. First we have the marriage amendment and now the breast law. What is next?
“We believe it is healthy for the state to encourage mothers to breast-feed,” Sen. Susan Wagle, R-Wichita, said. OMG, doctors encourage mothers to breast-feed. Any father in his right mind would encourage his wife to breast feed.
"The bill before the Legislature would allow a woman to breast-feed in any place she has a right to be. It also would excuse women who are breast-feeding from jury duty." Are there any laws that do not allow a mother to breast-feed in any place she has a right to be? Humm, let me ponder that one for a while.
"Experts have testified that breast-feeding is healthier for infants, creates a bond between child and mother, and is less expensive than formula." Wow, how much did we pay for that government study. This has always been the belief.
But in Kansas, many women have said they have been insulted, harassed and even threatened while breast-feeding in public.
My wife breast fed all four of our children. When she did in a "public" place, she would cover herself with the baby's blanket. While I certainly believe in the value of breast feeding, I hope we don't see the law abused. Please cover yourself if at all possible. And I might add, this is really not a problem. As to the complaint that many women have been insulted, harassed and even threatened, I have never seen that. A head or two may have turned. But I have not seen the behavior described. If I do, or if you do, say something to the offender. The offender being the big mouth that says something to the mother. Come on people, lets get our heads out of our butts and take care of our own business. Stop waiting on and letting the government control our lives to the point they pass laws saying it is OK to breast-feed in public. I would think our state government would have better things to do. Like the school finance mess they got us into. Oh wait, this is an easy, feel good bill. Well fine, get back to work.
