Palm & PalmOS Together Again

th_palm_logo_Office_new-1.jpgWhat does it mean. Does it mean that the PalmOS will not face the imminent demise so many said would take place? Does it mean that Palm will continue to use the OS that every competing smartphone manufacturer envies? Or does it mean that Apple is going to finally do what everyone has suspected for a number of years, buy Palm and the PalmOS.

We will have to watch and see what all of this means over the next few weeks and months.

Blackberry caused traffic pile-up

images.jpegIn Seattle, a 53-year-old was looking down at his Blackberry and caused a five car pile-up. Ooops!!!

Statistics on 57,000 vehicle collision during the first six months of 2006 show that drunken driving, drug use and excessive speeds contributed to 92.5 percent of collisions in the state.

But state officials also have started tracking accidents caused by any of 12 driver distractions, such as using handheld computers and cell phones, that account for the remaining 7.5 percent.

I would like to know what percent of the 7.5 percent is actually caused by handhelds and cell phones. And what percent of those are teenagers using cell phones in the car.

iPhone may have mini OS X

iphonemockup.jpgThe latest rumors surrounding Apple's much anticipated 'iPhone' is that it will contain a stripped-down version of Apple's next OS X operating system - codenamed Leopard.

Now that might be a reason for me to actually put the Treo 650 on my desk and leave it there. Mobile communication with iChat, appointments on iCal, sync'd to Daylite, a full Mail app. It will have to have a keyboard like the Treo and room to expand.

Well, it might not live up to my expectations and wishes. But, it is still exciting watching the iPhone develop over the next few months.

NewsGator Go

box-ngmobile-product.gifNewsGator has a new product NewsGator Go. The only problem for those of us who use a Palm is that it is for Windows Mobile only.

I use mRSS for RSS feeds on my Treo 650.

Apple Newton

Newton.jpegSo why can' t we get a newly designed Apple Newton? If Apple had this technology from 1993 to 1998, where is it now? Did Apple misplace its patent? Did they forget how to make this great PDA?

The Apple Newton, or simply Newton, is an early line of personal digital assistants developed, manufactured and marketed by Apple Computer from 1993 to 1998. The original Newtons were based on the ARM 610 RISC processor, and featured handwriting recognition. Apple's official name for the device was "MessagePad"; the term "Newton" was Apple's name for the operating system it used, but popular usage of the word Newton has grown to include the device and its software together. The name is an allusion to Isaac Newton's apple. It should be noted that, in 2006 c|net compared a Newton Message Pad 2000 to a Samsung Q1, and the Newton was declared better.

And that is from Wikipedia.

While I appreciate the rumors and hype of the iPhone. I for one, don't really care if I can play music on my PDA. Apple needs to consider the iPhone as a PDA/Phone first and an iPod second. I can listen to music on my Treo with mOcean. No big deal. What would be more impressive is a PDA with the same stable features and stable operating system of a Mac computer. Now that would be something.

OK, Steve Jobs and Apple, bring back the Newton Message Pad. Make it have the same features of the Treo and I would bet you, you could not make them fast enough.

UPDATE: Just checked my RSS feeder and realized that the PalmAddicts has a post today asking for your thoughts on the Apple Newton.

Google Map Mobile and the Treo

treo.png You can take the power of Google Maps with you on your Treo. This is a great program. You can get real-time traffic and detailed directions. I have it installed and it is not only useful but a lot of fun.

FutureLawyer beat me to the punch on this one.

Brighthand have done a review of the BlackBerry Pearl

Brighthand have done a review of the BlackBerry Pearl. 'There's no doubt about it, the Pearl is a huge step forward for RIM. This smartphone offers features that many current and potential BlackBerry users have been wanting for years. But, for all its progress, I think this company still has a ways to go. Its implementation of some of the new multimedia features in the Pearl is a bit clumsy and are in real need of polish. And it still lacks features business users want, like better and easier access to Microsoft Office files. At the same time, the feature that was RIM's biggest advantage for many years--push email--is available now on many other devices. All in all, I think this is a decent smartphone, and certainly better RIM's first one, the BlackBerry 7100 series. But it still needs some work if it's going to stand up to the competition.'

"BlackBerry Thumb" another good reason to get a Treo

GenImage.aspx.jpegI am sorry, but this is really funny. This from Reuters.

"It's a bit like the "Nintendo thumb" of the '90s," said occupational therapist Andrew Morton, referring to young people who spent hours battering hand-held video game controllers with their thumbs.

Morton, who specializes in hand therapy at the University Hospital in London, Ontario, said this problem was going to become more common, with increasing numbers of hand-held electronic devices with small buttons being used.

Hedge recommended preventive measures like holding the device comfortably in the hands and close to the body, and not typing for more than five minutes without a break.

"Don't type "War and Peace" with your thumbs! If you need to type long messages use and external keyboard for the device," Hedge said by e-mail.

I sense a workers comp claim being filed on this one, if it has not already happened.

Palm gets FCC approval for the Treo 680 and 750

medium.jpgGood news for those waiting to get either the new 680 or 750 from the Treo line. Documents recently published on the website of the Federal Communications Commission (FCC) indicates that the introduction of the new Treos may only be a few weeks away.

I plan to take a serious look at the 750. While I love my 650 and use it 24/7, I would love to have more RAM that is user available. Watch for details here and I will try to keep up on their release and post it here. I look for the provider Cingular to be the first to have them. I know that my provider, Alltel will take 10 years to get a new Treo.

UPDATE: More evidence the Treo 680 release is impending. Treo 680 appears on FCC website.

Tutorial Movies from Palm

logo_palm.gifI know there are some who have a new Palm PDA or Treo and are not getting the most out of it. And there are others who are thinking about getting one, but are scared to death of new technology. Don't hide behind your paper planner. I know you are out there. Palm has a set of tutorial movies that will give you a good introduction to basic operations and skills in using a Palm handheld and help you get started with many of the built-in applications. Introduction to Palm OS® 5 is where you need to go.

Agendus Updated

Agendus.gifTwo of my favorite applications have been updated. Agendus Professional Edition has been updated to 11.05. This truly is the ultimate personal assistant. Mail.gif

The other is Agendus Mail v. 5 and it has been updated to version 5.24. Mails integration with Agendus Professional Edition is seamless. In my opinion these are two must have programs for the lawyer using a PDA.

I will post soon on how I use these two great programs and their features. In the meantime, I would encourage you to visit the links above, download the trial versions and give them a try.

Side by Side Photo Comparison of the Treo 650 vs Treo 680

::PalmDubai is at it again with a great photo comparison of the Treo 650 vs the Treo 680.

Palm Treo 680 smartphone, vs Treo 650 smartphone

This is a great post from :: PalmDubai.Net comparing the Treo 680 and Treo 650. And since they did such a great job of comparing the two, I decided to provide the entire post here. Thanks to :: PalmDubai.Net for such a wonderful look at the two compared to each other.
Part I
Palm Treo 680 smartphone

I know a lot of you have no problem with the Treo antenna, but there is still huge number of Treo users who wish to have antenna less Treo smartphone, for me the antenna was something that made me feel home with Treo 650 as it reminded me very much of my first ever mobile phone; the Ericsson 7xx back when I was 13 or 15yrs old I don't remember exactly, for sure I'll miss it, specially when placing the smartphone in my belt, but at least now I don't have to worry about the antenna getting in my way ;-)

Palm Treo 650/680 smartphoneWe can talk all day about the antenna, but for sure removing the antenna will make the Treo smartphone more attractive to non smartphone and non palm OS users, which is a plus point for Palm Treo 680 over the 650.

Crackberry Blackberry

I hope that none of you see yourself in this video. I for one, use the Treo. However, I find myself exhibiting some of this same behavior. Perhaps we need a Crackberry [cracktreo] program we can attend to help us with it.

MobileWrite 3.5

51237.gif For those that miss Graffiti writing on their Treo, here is a program you can use.
"Using MobileWrite handwriting recognition software, it is easy to enter text and data, in to your favorite Palm OS applications, by simply writing on the screen of your handheld, instead of using the keyboard. MobileWrite gives you an option to use standard letters, Graffiti 1 or Graffiti 2 letters. Using the standard letters, capitals and lowercase letters can be written as you normally would on paper. With the ability to write words on the same screen as your application, letter writing or data entry can be done with less effort."

My Favorite Treo Programs

images.jpegFirst, let me just mention that my Treo 650 was one of the best purchases I have made.' Recently, I was asked what my "setup" was on my Treo.' So, I decided that instead of answering the email, I would do a post here and encourage comments providing what you may be using on your Treo or other Palm PDA.

Along side my Treo is another great piece of hardware and that is my Palm Treo Wireless Headset. Blue-Tooth at its best.' To hold my Treo, I use a new holster which I just love.' The' Treo Rubberized Holster.

The main program I use for my calendar and contact management on my Treo is Agendus for Palm OS.' I am using the pre v.11 version as there are bugs right now in v. 11.' In connection with the Personal Productivity program, I am using Agendus Mail to handle my emails while out of the office and for text messaging.' Both programs work well together.

To sync my Treo and my iBook, I use Missing Sync.' Designed from the ground up to support the latest Palm OS devices and Apple technologies, The Missing Sync for Palm OS provides everything you need to be more productive and keep on top of your day.

Documents ToGO is a must in my opinion.' This program allows you to read, edit and manage any form of a document you may have on your PDA.' I have all of the Kansas domestic statutes on my Treo using Documents ToGO.' In addition, I have certain documents I sometimes need to email to clients.' If I am out of the office, get an email which I have checked with my Treo and a new client needs something. I can email it as an attachment from Docs ToGO right from my Treo.'

Working right along side Documents ToGO is DataVizTech.' This the best way to easily move DTG components between RAM and SD Card.' They say you can save approximately 4MB or more of precious RAM space without any loss in DTG functionality.'

I also have a selection of utility programs that keep the Treo running smooth.' Destaller is an application oriented uninstaller.' Applications store many different files that often cause resets and the necessity to do a hard reset when not removed properly. Destaller removes this danger and headache. In addition Destaller allows you to maximize the memory of your device by allowing to safely remove single files, 'a68k' Files, saved and unsaved preferences and more.

Another handy little program is PrefDoctor.' It does just what its name implies, it maintains your preferences and allows some adjustments.

I also use another Hobbyist Software, Phone Technician.' As the website says, it keeps you Treo under control.' You can get different ringers, boost sound, has a built MP3 player, make setting up 3 way conference calls a breeze, easy dial, alarms, save battery and control the phone connection.' All that from one little program.

If there is one complaint I had with the Treo right out of the box, it would be its volume control.' VolumeCare is a must have.' VolumeCare increases the maximum volume levels for each Treo speaker. Studies have proven volume increases up to a 250% in handset volume, speaker phone volume and wired headset volume. VolumeCare will also allow you to adjust your voice volume (aka microphone) so others will hear you *loud* and clear.' VolumeCare also allows you to set pre-defined default volume listening levels for each speaker type on your Treo. So you can preset the listening level for your earpiece separately from the Speaker Phone.

PowerRUN is a program that helps to save memory.' It enables you to run applications form the memory card.' Enough said.' Get it.

The last program I am going to mention that I have in my "setup" is KeyCaps650.' KeyCaps650 allows you to easily capitalize letters or use punctuation without using the shift or option keys on a Treo 650.

Please post comments to this and let us all know what some of your favorite programs are you are using on your Treo or other PDA.

Iambic's YourCall

prodnavbar_name.gifI am trying a new program that was just released by Iambic, called YourCall.

YourCall is a versatile utility tool that conveniently captures your post-call dialog and offers a variety of useful follow-up actions you can take after you hang up.

3.jpg

YourCall helps you with 4 easy-to-access, "thumb sized" actions:

(Depending on whether the contact is known or not)

• View Contact Card - View contact's detailed information

• Add to Contact - Adds the received phone number to a current contact

• Add to Journal - Adds the contact or phone number to your journal

• Call Back - Calls the number back

• Send SMS - Send SMS to the number or contact

• Take no action - Exits the YourCall dalog

This really does look like a great program and it works right along with Ageudus, which I use for my calendar and contact management on my Treo.

UPDATE: 10/5/2006 -- I had some minor issues today with YourCall. Let me just say the support from Iambic is awesome. We did some emailing back and forth and we resolved my minor issue. If there is ever any doubt that Palm OS software companies don't provide great, personal service, try Iambic.

Reading Books on my Treo

header_logo.gifI recently downloaded and installed eReader to my Treo. Since we do spend time waiting. Usually for a court hearing or something else, I thought I would try reading a couple of books on my Treo.

eReader is free. You can spend an additional $7.45 for the Pro version, which has the following features:

• Customize and even create color themes to their liking.

• Adjust several display features to personalize your eReader such as justification of text and line spacing.

• Use reference books to enhance their reading experience, i.e. Merriam - Webster's Pocket Dictionary.

• Take advantage of Auto Scroll viewing features to enhance readability.

I plan to try the lite version before I spend the extra money on the Pro version.

Treo Family Comparison Chart

images.jpegTreonauts has a post today called, Treo Family Comparison Chart: Understanding the Differences. It is a great source to compare the features of each of the Treos. If you are considering the purchase of this wonderful tool to stay "Connected", I would encourage you to use the chart.

UPDATE: Here is the permalink to the great cmoparison chart: CHART
